A new chair in global primary care: Oxford invites family doctors to apply

University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is recruiting the inaugural Dr Sadok Besrour Professor of Global Primary Care. WONCA warmly encourages members of our global community to consider this opportunity.

The post is based in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, one of the world's leading academic departments of primary care. The postholder will establish and direct the newly created Besrour Centre for Global Primary Care, made possible by a gift of over £8.4 million from the Fondation Docteur Sadok Besrour. The Centre will work to improve access to high-quality, evidence-based primary care worldwide, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Its activities will include a global community of practice, scholarship programmes for Besrour Fellows, international forums, and research and advocacy to strengthen primary care systems.

Many in our community will recognise the Besrour name. WONCA has long valued its relationship with the Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine at the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and we hope that spirit of collaboration can continue with the new Centre at Oxford.

This is a clinical role. Applicants must be qualified primary care clinicians, and the postholder will hold an honorary clinical contract alongside their academic leadership. The University is seeking an internationally outstanding leader with a strong record of research, funding, and policy impact, and a clear commitment to equitable primary health care.

The department has told us it would particularly welcome applications from candidates in low- and middle-income countries and from underrepresented groups. WONCA shares that aspiration. We would be proud to see a member of our community take on this role, and we encourage well-placed colleagues to apply.

The closing date is 12 noon UK time on Wednesday 30 September 2026. You can read the announcement from the Nuffield Department, and full details are available on the University of Oxford recruitment page.
